What This Guide Covers

Spain has one of the most developed networks of sustainability certifications and protected areas in Southern Europe. The following sections examine how those standards work in practice.

Green Certifications

The EU Ecolabel, Biosphere Tourism label and Travelife certification are the three most widely used schemes for hotels and travel operators in Spain.

National Park Conduct

Spain's 16 national parks operate under the Red de Parques Nacionales framework, which sets binding visitor guidelines to protect biodiversity and landscapes.

Eco-Friendly Accommodation

Water recycling, on-site solar generation, zero-waste kitchen programmes and local food sourcing are the most common measures implemented by certified properties.

Spain's Sustainability Certification Landscape

EU Ecolabel for Tourist Accommodation

The EU Ecolabel is the only pan-European environmental certification for accommodation. Criteria cover energy consumption, water use, waste management and chemical use. As of 2023, Spain has one of the highest numbers of EU Ecolabel certified accommodations in Europe.

Biosphere Tourism Label

Issued by the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI), this certification aligns with UNESCO's Man and Biosphere programme. It covers destinations, hotels and tour operators. Several Spanish communities, including Lanzarote and the Canary Islands, hold Biosphere Destination certification.

Travelife

A global scheme focused on tour operators and travel agents rather than individual properties. It audits supply chain management, environmental impact and social performance. Several major Spanish-based tour operators hold Gold level Travelife certification.

Q for Tourist Quality

The Marca Q de Calidad Turística is a Spanish national quality certification managed by ICTE (Instituto para la Calidad Turística Española). While primarily a quality mark, its latest versions incorporate environmental management criteria aligned with ISO 14001.
